Thewa is a traditional art of fusing 23K Gold with multicolored glass. It is an art that pulsates with life, is caught in motifs used on jewellery, which shows the culture, heritage and tales of romance and valor with nature and happiness depicting the art of the fine craftsmanship. Beginning of this unique art is still a mystery, the origin of Thewa dates back in the year 1767 under the patronage of Maharawat Samant Singh of Rajasthan. Thewa literal meaning stands for settings. It is an exceptional art of jewelry making which involves ornamentation of intricately worked out sheet of 23 K gold on molten glass. Shrouded in complete mystery as to its making the artisans of Thewa follow a patriarchal method of practicing the art for fear of divulging family secrets to their daughter’s in-laws as a result the legacy is carried from father to son only.
Each unit consists of a flat piece of transparent glass, of different colors intentionally suggesting Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire. In the last century Thewa unit makers prepared elaborate settings in gold wire in the Canetille style, so called after a contemporary European style. The craft of thewa is still practiced by traditional craftsperson in the small fortified town of Pratapgarh in south Rajasthan. The technique of thewa has been used to create extremely interesting ornaments, plates, trays and jewellery, as well as tiny objects for day to day use. This skill and the expertise required to create thewa objects is unique to Pratapgarh.
