People have been making jewelry out of gold for a long time. Artisans during the Copper Age started working with the precious metal as early as the 4th millennium BC. Gold was prized for its beauty, rarity, and versatility by most of the great civilizations of antiquity. The Ancient Egyptians had a special relationship with the metal. Investments in mining technology and a commitment to prospecting made gold one of their most valuable natural resources.
The Greeks were also fond of gold, but the Romans were downright obsessed with it. Their enormous empire gave them access to lands where the metal could be extracted on a large scale. Roman engineers invented hydraulic mining methods, which allowed them to collect gold in huge quantities. Before this time, gold was only owned or worn by kings, queens, and other aristocrats. It was rarely traded or exchanged by the hoi polloi. The Romans were the first to use gold as a mainstream form of currency. Their entire monetary system was based on a gold coin called the aureus, which was more valuable and rarer than a silver coin known as the denarius.
Gold Jewelry
About half of the gold that is mined each year is used to make decorative accessories. It is easily the most popular of the precious metals. There are many reasons why gold never seems to go out of style. The most obvious one is its appearance. No other decorative metal looks anything like gold. Most have silvery, grayish, or whitish colors. Gold, on the other hand, has a bright yellow luster that it difficult to duplicate and almost unmistakable. And because it is the most malleable and ductile metal on earth, it is also easy to work with.
As we mentioned at the outset, people have been making jewelry out of gold for thousands of years. To have a career as a Goldsmith was an important and respected profession in most of the ancient cultures that had access to the metal. In medieval Europe these skilled artisans formed guilds and demanded high salaries for their services. Most worked for wealthy patrons and created extremely intricate works of wearable art.
Where are we now?
Although it is more widely available and affordable than it was in the past, gold has not lost its symbolic value or appeal. It is still a popular symbol of purity, royalty, rarity, and value. Most purists believe it is the only metal that should be used to make wedding rings and most other articles of jewelry. The price of gold has risen significantly in recent years, which means gold jewelry is quite expensive.
Wearing Gold Jewelry
Most ornamental accessories have either a gold or silver color. Silver is known as a cool tone, because it is related to colors that are worn in the winter and summer, while gold is a warm tone, since it pairs best with colors for the autumn and spring. According to fashion experts, gold jewelry should be worn with warm colors that are golden, muted, rich, and earthy. They include colors like red, orange, gray, cream, olive, light brown, and oyster for autumn. The colors should be warm but a little brighter for the spring. Sunny colors like salmon, teal, and turquoise look great with gold jewelry, or vice versa. What about black?
While black is generally considered a winter color, it also looks great with gold. Just don’t overdo it! Some women wear so much gold jewelry with their little black dresses that the overall effect is loss, or worse yet, they look gaudy! Remember, less is more, especially when it comes to gold jewelry. A gold necklace or a bracelet may be the perfect complement to your ensemble, but wearing both may be too much.
How to Save Money on Gold
Gold is an extremely soft metal, which means that it must be alloyed with other metals to make it strong enough to work with. These other metal are not only stronger than gold, they are also a lot cheaper. In other words, the lower the cartage, the less you will pay. Pure gold (24k) is almost never used to make jewelry. The most popular cartage is 18k, which is 75% pure gold and 25% base metal, most commonly copper.
Jewelry lovers can save beaucoup bucks on gold rings and bracelets that contain more copper (or another alloy) and less gold. A 14k or 10k ornament can be purchased for hundreds, even thousands less than one is 22k or 18k gold. Furthermore, these accessories are virtually indistinguishable from each other.
Gold jewelry can be purchased at competitive prices from reputable sellers on the internet.
